Understanding Casual Loading in Australia
Casual loading is an additional percentage added to a casual employee's base hourly rate to compensate for the lack of certain entitlements that permanent employees receive. Under the National Employment Standards (NES) and most Modern Awards, the casual loading is set at 25%.
What Does the 25% Cover?
The casual loading is designed to compensate for:
- Annual leave: Permanent employees get 4 weeks paid leave per year
- Personal/carer's leave: 10 days paid sick/carer's leave per year
- Redundancy pay: Up to 16 weeks' pay based on service length
- Notice of termination: 1-5 weeks' notice depending on service
Casual Conversion Rights
Since March 2021, casual employees who have worked for the same employer for 12 months on a regular and systematic basis have the right to request conversion to permanent employment. Employers with 15+ employees must offer conversion if certain criteria are met.
Casual Loading and Penalty Rates
Under most Modern Awards, casual employees receive both the 25% casual loading AND penalty rates when working on weekends, public holidays, or outside ordinary hours. This means a casual working on a Sunday could receive significantly more than a permanent employee.
